    Historical Background

SMS Dresden was the lead ship of the Dresden-class light cruiser of the Imperial German Navy, launched in 1907 and commissioned in 1908. At the outbreak of WWI, she operated as an overseas raider in the South Atlantic. She escaped destruction at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in 1914. In March 1915, trapped by British warships in Cumberland Bay, Chile, her crew scuttled the cruiser to prevent capture.
