    Historical Background

    The Ferdinand heavy tank destroyer was built on Porsche Tiger (P) chassis. Ninety vehicles were completed, seeing combat for the first time at the Battle of Kursk in summer 1943. In its original Ferdinand configuration, there was no hull‑mounted defensive machine‑gun.

    After heavy combat losses, surviving vehicles were sent back to factory for overhaul and modification, adding hull‑front machine gun and other upgrades, and then renamed Elefant. Powerful 88 mm Pak43 gun and 200 mm frontal armour gave outstanding anti‑tank performance, but electrical transmission suffered low battlefield reliability.
