Historical Background

The Sd.Kfz.184 Ferdinand heavy tank‑destroyer was built on surplus Porsche Tiger VK4501(P) chassis rejected during the heavy‑tank competition. Entering service in early 1943, it mounted the powerful long‑barrelled 8.8 cm Pak 43 anti‑tank gun and featured extremely thick frontal armour.

The Ferdinand first saw large‑scale combat at the Battle of Kursk in Operation Citadel, where it achieved outstanding anti‑tank performance, though mechanical unreliability and the complete lack of a hull‑mounted machine‑gun exposed it to close‑range infantry assaults. Surviving vehicles were later returned to factory workshops, fitted with Zimmerit anti‑magnetic coating and modified into the Elefant standard.
