    Historical Background

    The 17/25‑pdr “Pheasant” was an emergency expedient anti‑tank weapon of British Royal Artillery in World War II. The powerful 17‑pdr gun barrel was mated to modified 25‑pounder howitzer carriages, because purpose‑built gun carriages were not yet ready.

    These hybrid weapons were rushed to North‑Africa in late‑1942, first seeing combat in Tunisia 1943, later widely used in Sicily and Italian campaign against heavy German armour including Tiger tanks. The gun crews wore lightweight tropical shorts‑and‑shirt field uniform for hot Mediterranean battlefield climate.
