In order to counter the battleships that the United States had begun construction of, the Japanese Navy planned to build two Super Yamato-class battleships, which were enhanced versions of the Yamato-class battleships, as part of the (5) Plan (Fifth Naval Armaments Expansion Plan) in 1942.
Initially, the standard displacement was planned to be 85,000 tons, with three or four triple 51cm guns, and a speed of 30 knots, but due to issues with docks, supply facilities, and port facilities, it is said that in the end a proposal was submitted to mount three twin 51cm guns on a hull similar in size to the Yamato-class, and to have a speed equivalent to that of the Yamato-class.
Also, although there is no documentation regarding the ship's name, some military commentators claim that, in accordance with the naming rules for battleships, it was planned to inherit the names of the battleships Kii and Owari, which were planned as part of the 8-8 Fleet Plan.
