Berryfire and Beaver Corporation's new collaboration product: 1/350 Japanese Navy Heavy Cruiser Atago
Atago was the second ship of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Takao-class heavy cruisers, and its name comes from Mount Atago in Kyoto Prefecture.
The ship was laid down in 1927 and completed in 1932.
The four Takao-class ships were all lined up at the fleet review held the year after their completion, and the Takao-class, including the Atago, became widely known to the public, and their imposing, large, castle-like bridges made them popular.
After undergoing modernization in 1938, she replaced Maya as flagship of the 2nd Fleet in 1941 and advanced southward to prepare for the outbreak of war.
After the outbreak of war, she often operated together with Takao, supporting landings and jointly sinking small vessels.
After completing the delayed replacement of her anti-aircraft guns in May 1942, she operated in the Aleutian Islands, participated in the Third Battle of the Solomon Islands in November of the same year, and was slightly damaged in an air raid on Rabaul in November 1943.
After completing repairs in June 1944, she participated in the Battle of the Philippine Sea as the flagship of the advance force, but in October of the same year, she was attacked by the submarine Darter off the coast of Palawan, hit by four torpedoes, and sunk.
