    Historical Background

The M1070 and M1000 HETS (Heavy Equipment Transport System) was fielded by the US Army starting in 1993. Manufactured by Oshkosh, the M1070 8×8 tractor can carry the M1 Abrams main battle tank and other heavy armoured vehicles. The matching M1000 semi-trailer adopts multi-wheel bogies and hydraulic leveling suspension, capable of highway and cross-country transport. The whole system can be airlifted by C-5 and C-17 transport aircraft and remains the primary heavy tank transporter of the US Army.
