    Historical Background

Richelieu was the lead ship of the Richelieu-class battleship, the most powerful French capital ship of World War II. Launched in 1939, she sailed to Dakar when France fell in 1940. After rejoining the Allies in 1942, she underwent major refit in the United States in 1943, receiving updated radar and anti-aircraft weapons. She later operated with the British Home Fleet and then the Eastern Fleet against Japan. After the war, she returned to French service and remained in the fleet until the 1960s.
