    Historical Background

    The F-117A Nighthawk, developed by Lockheed Skunk Works, is the world’s first operational stealth attack aircraft. It first flew in 1981 and entered USAF service in 1983. Its faceted shape was designed to deflect radar waves to achieve low observability. It gained global fame during the 1991 Gulf War, conducting precision night strikes against heavily defended targets. The type also saw combat in Yugoslavia, Iraq and Afghanistan, and was officially retired by the US Air Force in 2008.
