    History

    The Douglas SBD Dauntless served as the backbone of the U.S. Pacific Fleet Naval Air Force, holding the lowest loss rate among all U.S. carrier-based aircraft. Between 1940 and July 1944, Douglas manufactured a total of 5,936 SBD Dauntless bombers plus its U.S. Army variant, the A-24.
    The SBD featured a distinctive perforated flap system nicknamed the "Swiss Cheese". Its dive brakes were covered with 3-inch round holes, enabling precise dive runs on targets and stable pull-out from near-vertical bombing angles. Beyond U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Army Air Forces service, the Dauntless was also operated by New Zealand, Mexico and other nations.
    The first enemy warship sunk by U.S. Navy aircraft in WWII was destroyed by an SBD launched from the USS Enterprise. Throughout the war, SBDs sank a total of 18 enemy vessels, including 1 battleship and 6 aircraft carriers.
    The SBD-3, introduced in March 1941, mounted twin 12.7mm machine guns on the engine cowling. It incorporated self-sealing fuel tanks and crew protective armor, powered by a 1,000 hp Wright R-1820-52 radial engine.
