Unboxing Review of Border Model BC-004 Kirov Airship Model Kit

In Border Model's product line, the Red Alert series occupies a very special niche. After releasing the Apocalypse Tank and Grizzly Tank, Border Model BC-004 Kirov kit has been released, which is even more popular. 

Like the previous kits, this Border Model BC-004 Kirov features a snap-fit, pre-coloured design, and comes with lighting and motorised components. Once completed, the propeller can spin and the lights inside the gondola can illuminate, offering great playability. 

Since this is a fictional subject from a video game, the kit does not include a scale marking. The entire hull length exceeds 35 cm. The number of sprues is higher than typical snap-fit, pre-coloured kits, with parts moulded in four colours: black, red, orange, and grey. Clear parts, as well as motorised and lighting components, are also included. 

The hull of Border Model BC-004 Kirov uses a traditional two‑half moulding, featuring raised skin panel effects, with the surface covered in locating holes. 

The base serves as the battery compartment, with large rivets and iconic Soviet-style lettering and patterns from the game moulded on the surface. 

Details of the propeller and the gondola beneath the hull – the gondola is richly detailed, with clear parts that can be installed on the inside of the portholes. 

The hydraulic struts of the landing gear are moulded using slide‑mould technology, with piping details also incorporated. The short wings on the hull feature numerous recessed rivet details, while the red reinforcing structure at the rear of the hull shows slight sink marks on the surface.

Pros: This Kirov is the third kit in Border's Red Alert series, and it is already forming a recognisable collection. With its larger size and greater popularity, it is irresistible to modellers who love the Red Alert theme.

The kit retains some of the detailing found in traditional assembly kits, while the snap-fit, pre-coloured design effectively lowers the barrier to entry, making it easier to attract new modellers to the hobby. The addition of motorised and lighting features further enhances playability, and the overall design shows greater maturity.

Cons: The wiring in the finished model is externally exposed – this is a matter of personal taste. Some may find it messy, while others feel that exposed wiring better highlights the rugged character of Soviet equipment. A few parts also show slight sink marks.
